Document Summary

Atomic number, z: the number of protons in the nucleus. Neutron number, n: the number of neutrons in the nucleus. Mass number, a: the number of nucleons in the nucleus. Nuclear force: an attractive force that acts between all nuclear particles. The isotopes of an element have the same z value, but different n and a values. The total energy of the bound system (the nucleus) is less than the combined energy of the separated nucleons. This difference is called the binding energy of the nucleus and can be thought of as the energy that must be added to a nucleus to break it apart into its separated neutrons and protons. Three types of radiation: alpha particles, beta particles, and gamma particles. Positron: a particle similar to the electron in all respects except that it has a charge of +e (said to be the antiparticle of the electron)
