They also trap wbc (natural defense against bacteria) Often die from infections before age 20. Thus when a sperm penetrates an egg, their chromosomes combine to produce 23 pair of chromosomes. Contains btwn 200 million - 500 million sperms. Only few hundred of these reach the 15 - 20 cm fallopian tubes. When a sperm penetrates the cellular wall of the egg, chemical changes occur and immediately blocks. Around 5ml of semen is released during ejaculation all other sperms. Most cells of the body have 46 chromosomes : tiny structures in the nucleus that contain genetic material. When a egg & sperm combine at fertilization, the new individual will have full set of 46 chromosomes. Many diff treatments available for couples who cannot conceive naturally.
