According to functional approach, emotions are useful because they help ppl adapt to their environment. Basic emotions are experienced by people everywhere, and each consists of three elements: a subjective feeling, a physiological change and an overt behavior. Using facial expressions and other overt behaviors, we can see basic emotions in infants. According to one influential theory, newborns experience only two general emotions : pleasure & distress. By 8/9 months, infants are thought to experience all basic emotions. Social smiles first appear : infants smile when they see another person. It reflects the infants pleasure in simple interactions with others. They coo while smiling, move arms and legs expressing excitement. Anger is first negative emotion to emerge (from distress category); between 4 - 6months.
