Tourism- a person travelling somewhere outside of their usual environment for leisure or business for not more than 1 consecutive year. Foreign tourist- someone traveling to a country that is not their own. Excursionist- a tourist or traveler staying less than 24 hours. Multiplier effect-creates jobs and encourages growth by tourism. Travel deficit- amount difference loss between cash flow in and out. Early days- no one traveled since they had no funds and less time. Tribes met occasionally for religious, business and social purposes. The 3 major civilizations to dominate the world between. 4800 bce and 300 ce were egyptians, romans and greeks. Egyptians- developed strong governments and large cities, attracting travelers. Greeks- made travel big with open ports and roads (900 bce) Romans- developed travel infrastructure, constructing major roadways (400 bce) their coinage became universally accepted currency. Collapse of roman empire- (400 ce) no one dared to travel at this time.
