Document Summary

6. 1 - overview on bonding: ionic bonds form the electrostatic attraction between cation and anion. They are prominent and referred to as salts: covalent bonds form when atoms share electrons, the bonds form when there is a balance between the repulsive forces(electron-electron, nuclei-nuclei) and the attractive forces (nuclei-electron) Representation of bonds: for ionic, the cations and the anions are treated like spheres of positive and negative charge, for covalent, the valance electrons are shared, this is shown in lewis diagram. If no one of the outer atoms will donate to it: formal charge should be minimized. Formal charge (fc: is used to keep record of how much the sharing of electrons deviates from the free atom, it does not consider electronegativity di erences, it is calculated as: Fe = valance electrons in free atom - valance electrons assigned to that atom in lewis. Valance electrons assigned = 1/2 bonding electrons +lone pair electrons.
