Glucocorticoids function mainly in mobilizing cellular fuel, thus reinforcing the effects of glucagon. It promotes the synthesis of glucose from noncarbohyrates such as proteins and fast. Very high levels of it can suppress the body"s defence system. 29. 11 the sex hormones are steroid hormones that affect frowth and development and also regulate reproductive cycles and sexual behaviour. Gonads or sex glands secrete sex hormones in addition to producing gametes. They produce three major categories of sex hormones: estrogens, progestin"s, and androgens. Estrogens are mainly in women, they maintain the female reproductive system and promote the development of female features such as smaller body size and higher pitched voice, breasts and wider hips. Progestin"s such as progesterone are primarily involved in preparing and maintaining the uterus to support an embryo. Androgens stimulated the development and maintenance of the male reproductive system. Males have a high ratio of androgens to estrogens, with their main androgen being testosterone.
