Gastrula - the embryonic stage following the blastula, at this stage is is now hollow and has three layers. Most animals have a gastrula made up of three layers of cells ( ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm) Ectoderm - the outer layer of the three embryonic cell layers in the gastrula. It forms the outer coverings, eye lenses, inner ear and the nervous system. Mesoderm - the middle layer of the three embryonic cell layers. It gives rise to the skeleton, muscles, and circulatory system. Coelom - a body cavity completely lined with mesoderm. Endoderm - the inner most layer of the three embryonic cell layers in the gastrula. It forms the archenteron in the gastrula and gives rise to the liver, pancreas, lungs and the lining of the digestive tract. Differentiation - the specialization in the structure and function of cells that occurs during the development of an organism, results from selective activation and deactivation of the cell genes.
