You can make ripening process shorter by storing them in a bag so that the ethylene gas accumulates: stored apples are often flushed with co2, inhibiting ethylene synthesis. Also, air is circulated around the apples to prevent ethylene from accumulating. Hence, apples picked in autumn can be stored for sale the following summer. Falling of leaves an aging process leaves lose their colour because chlorophyll is broken down during autumn. Autumn lead drop is an adaptation that helps to keep the tree from drying out in winter. Without its leaves, a tree loses less water from frozen ground. Before leaves fall, many essential elements are salvaged from them and stored in the stem, where they can be recycled into new leaves the following spring. When an autumn leaf falls, the based of the lead stalk separtes from the stem. The separation region is called the abscission layer.
