Overall (freshwater) theatre requires one actor and one viewer/listener: questions whether audience has to listen or see. Overall (freshwater) audience is derived from latin term "to hear" but theatre is derived "place of seeing" Overall (freshwater) establishes literature idea surrounding the singularity of audience although there can be such diversity within one audience. Grotowski: "theatre is what takes place between spectator and actor" Handke: in theatre the relationship between actor and audience makes a rational, indispensable theatre event. Rayner: the conflicting idea of intersectionality of those in audiences, and how each part of the spectator could react differently, ie, view of a mom, teacher, and assault victim. Mackintosh: theatre architecture is a channel for energy. The energy of the performer must transfer through the spectator and the energy must be returned. This cycle contributes to the uniqueness of live performance. Carlson: literature ignores the response and contributions of the audience.
