Soc3490: when justice is a game by madonna maidment. More money is being spend on the inquiries themselves than is received in compensation by those wrongfully convicted. The main argument of this book is that the medico-legal systems, by their very organization are insufficient in and of themselves to explain the manufacturing of a wrongful conviction. Institutions and their elite members are presentative of broader social ordering that privileges white, wealthy, credentialed men and their shared worldviews. The ovl is a tool that the state and its elite club members use to maintain the status quo. Wrongful convictions, therefore, are framed as unfortunate casualties of a human system that is bound to make occasional mistakes. A trial may in theory be an objective pursuit of truth guided by established rules of criminal procedure and evidence, but in practice there are many subjective factors that influence the course of events.
