Complex emoions: self-conscious or self-evaluaive emoions (involve some damage/enhancement of sense of self) that emerge in the second year and depend, in part, on cogniive development: embarrassment, shame, guilt, envy, and pride. By the middle of the irst year, infants are making progress at regulaing their negaive arousal. By age 3, children begin to show some limited ability to disguise for their true feelings. Social referencing: the use of other"s emoional expressions to infer the meaning of otherwise ambiguous situaions: ability becomes more obvious between 7-10 months. Begin to talk about emoions around 18-24 months. Temperament: a person"s characterisic modes of responding emoionally and behaviourally to environmental events, including such atributes as acivity level, irritability, fearfulness, and sociability. Irritable distress fussiness, crying, and showing distress when desires are frustrated. Six dimensions that provide a descripion of infant"s diferences in temperament: fearful distress wariness, distress, and withdrawal in new situaions or in response to novel simuli.
