Apgar score is used to evaluate the newborn"s condiion. Use 5 vital signs (breathing, heartbeat, muscle tone, presence of relexes and skin tone) and receive a score of 0-2, with 2 being most opimal. 7 or more indicates good physical condiion. 3 or less indicates life-threatening situaions that require immediate care. For a more comprehensive assessment, the neonatal behavioural assessment scale (nbas) is used to evaluate funcioning of four systems: Autonomic: ability to control body funcions such as breathing and temperature regulaion. Motor: ability to control body movements and acivity level. State: ability to maintain a state (i. e. staying alert/asleep) Based on the view that newborns are competent individuals. Relexes: unlearned responses that are triggered by a speciic form of simulaion. Some pave the way for newborns to get the nutrients they need to grow i. e. rooing and sucking. Others protect the child from danger in the environment blink and withdrawal.
