Chapter 6: physical development: the brain, body, motor skills and sexual. Babies grow rapidly, often doubling by 4 to 6 months of age. By age two toddlers are half their eventual adult height. From age 2 to puberty children grow 5-8 cm a year and 3 kg in weight. From age 6 to 11 they seem to grow very little. Puberty results in 5 to 10 cm of growth a year. Cephalocaudal development a sequence of physical maturation and growth that proceeds from the head (cephalic region) to the tail (caudal region) Proximodistal development a sequence of physical maturation and growth that proceeds from the centre of the body (proximal region) to the extremities (distal regions); this reverses just before puberty. Skeletal structures that form during prenatal period are soft cartridge that gradually ossifies. During postnatal development blood cell production becomes limited to specific bones.
