PSYC 2390 Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Amygdala, Piriform Cortex, Orbitofrontal Cortex
Document Summary
Pheromones: molecules emited by members of a species that causes a speciic reacion in another individual of the same species, olfactory cues can be used to signal a woman"s level of reproducive ferility. Pheromones are not a strong (if they are used at all) in humans. Anosmia: the loss of the ability to smell as a result form injury or infecion, allows us to realize how life is enhanced by our ability to smell. Detecing odours: detecion threshold for odours is the lowest concentraion at which an odorant can be detected. The detecion threshold varies for diferent odours: humans have less receptors than most animals for detecing smells, diference threshold is the smallest diference in the concentraion of 2 odours that can be detected. Idenifying odours: when an odour"s concentraion is just near threshold, the person cannot usually sense the quality of the odour.
