PSYC 2040 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Null Hypothesis, Sample Size Determination, Linear Regression
Document Summary
This chapter is concerned with procedures that assess the relationship between 2 variables- how differences on one attribute relate to the differences on another attribute. We want to know if there is a relationship between x and y- & if so, the nature of that relationship. Y is considered to vary as a function of x- this relationship is defined by the equation: Y" = the value of y predicted given the value of x. The values of y", as calculated using the above equation would describe a straight line passing through these points on a scatterplot. Positive relationship= high on x, high on y. Negative relationship= high on x, low on y or high on y, low on x. If points tend fall close to the line, there is a strong relationship, if the points tend to be far from the line, the relationship would be described as weak.
