PSYC 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Paul Broca, Materialism, Phlegm
Document Summary
Psychology: the scientific study of behaviour, thought, and experience, and how they can be affected by physical, mental, social, and environmental factors. It involves the study of behaviour that can include perceptions, thoughts and emotions. A scientist is a person who carefully follows a system of observing, predicting, and testing is conducting science, whether the subject matter is chemicals, physiology, human memory, or social interactions. The study of science is based not on the subject but on the use of scientific method. The scientific method is a way of learning about the world through collecting observations, developing theories to explain them, and using the theories to make predictions. Hypothesis: a testable prediction about processes that can be observed and measured. Can be supported or rejected (have to rethink the theory) and it must be testable. Difference between science and astrology: scientists are eager to test hypothesis, whereas the astrologists would rather you just take the word for it.
