Psych 1000 textbook 14.2
• Stress-a psychological and physiological reaction that occurs when perceived demands exceed
existing resources to meet those demands.
• Accessing a threat is primary appraisal and figuring out what to do about it secondary appraisal
• Fight or flight response-a set of physiological changes that occur in response to psychological or
physical threats

and exhaustion.
• The alarm reaction is the recognition of the threat and the physical response that comes with
that.
• Resistance is when one uses their physical or mental resources to respond to a stressor like
running away from a predator or study really hard the night before a test
• Exhaustion happen because an animal cannot stay at resistance forever so exhaustion happens
when the stressor has lessened

communication between the nervous system (the hypothalamus) and the endocrine system
(pituitary and adrenal glands)
• When stress is perceived the hypothalamus releases a substance called corticotrophin-releasing
factor which stimulates the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotrophic hormone which
triggers the release of cortisol.
• Cortisol- a hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex that prepares the body to respond to
stressful situations
• women are more likely to respond to with the tend and befriend response then the fight or
flight response
