Document Summary

Scientific research aims for objectivity this can be difficult because everyone"s perspective is subjective. Objective measurement-the measure of an entity or behaviour that, within an allowed margin of error, is consistent across instruments. Operational definitions-are statements that describe the procedures and specific measurements that are used to record observations. Validity-the degree to which an instrument or procedure actually measures what can be measured. Reliability-when it provides a consistent and stable across multiple observations and points in time. Generalizability-refers to the degree to which one set of results that can be applied to other situations, individuals and events. Population- a group that the researcher wants to make the generalization about. Random sample- a sampling technique in which every individual of population has an equal chance of being included. Convenience sample- samples of individuals who are most readily available. Ecological validity- meaning that the results of a laboratory study can be applied to or repeated in the natural environment.
