Newly industrializing countries: asia and parts of latin america, dramatic rates of economic growth and democratization, resemble advanced democracies in many ways. Less developed countries: those which have slid into poverty, violence and civil con ict. Empires: single political authorities that have under their sovereignty a large number of external regions. Imperialism: state extends its power to directly control territory, resources and people beyond its borders. Colonialism: a greater degree of physical occupation of a foreign territory through military, business or settlers. Modern imperialism dates back to the 15th century (chinese backed away from imperialism at this time - made oceangoing vehicles illegal- wanted to consolidate what they had) The places that were dominated by europe lacked the military power to withstand it.
