Phillips began his red, hot, and blue show on whbq in memphis: freed was enormously successful in cleveland, and reports of his popularity there drew the attention of wins in new york. In september 1954 he debuted in the big apple, where he repeated his midwestern success on a much larger media stage. In the waning months of 1954 and into 1955, freed created a considerable buzz over rhythm and blues among white teenagers in one of the country"s major markets.
