1960: due to a variety of factors, most of rock"s originators and the labels they worked for were out of the music business by 1960. The success of the movie mixed with its dealing with teenage rebellion and rowdiness marked an important emergence of rock and roll: once it became clear that such records would sell, the market was flooded with them. Phillips began his red, hot, and blue show on whbq in memphis: freed was enormously successful in cleveland, and reports of his popularity there drew the attention of wins in new york. In september 1954 he debuted in the big apple, where he repeated his midwestern success on a much larger media stage. In the waning months of 1954 and into 1955, freed created a considerable buzz over rhythm and blues among white teenagers in one of the country"s major markets.
