Chapter 5: the growth of athens and the persian wars. Athens from the early bronze age to the early archaic age. First athenian recovery from the postinvasion is the appearance of protogeometric pottery around 1050 bc. By 900 bc, the basileus of athens was preeminent within attica. The athenians ascribed the unification to theseus, who"s mythically linked with his companion, heracles. Making theseus the founder of their polis and its democracy, the athenians followed the common greek practice of attributing important events of the preliterate period to some great figure from the legendary past. Known the eponymous archon gave his name to the year. 6 judicial officials called thesmothetai were added. The 9 archons are elected annually from candidates drawn from the small circle of aristocratic families known as the eupatrids. Archons governed athens in concert with the council that met on the hill (pagos) sacred to the war god ares.
