Fearful during the world war that britain and us would turn on russia and sign a separate peace treaty with germany. Poland, czechoslovakia, eastern germany liberated by the red army towards the end of ww2. Cessation of germany: division of eastern and western europe, berlin was divided into four separate military lines; soviet, britain, us, france. Policy of germany west, and russia east were separate. Soviet was in bad industrial state; stripped germany industries of manufacturing equipment and took them back to russia (eastern germany) Western zones start to politically and economic be built back up. If germany were kept neutral it would become russian territory, so britain and us occupied. Western politicians began to think that they should make this division of berlin permanent esp. because the politics of stalin didn"t coincide with the rest of the world.
