Maritime region comprises pew, new brunswick, and nova scotia. 3 provinces together with nfl and labrador makeup atlantic canada. Part of the appalachian mountain chain (considerably old), and landscape is a result of glaciation and weathering and erosion. Rounded mountains, upland, lowlands, river valleys, and highly indented coastline. Small rivers and streams; forests of both hardwoods and softwoods are found throughout. Soils are often acidic and poorly drained, there are exceptions on pei, in nova. Scotia"s fertile annapolis valley, in saint john river valley of new brunswick, and other pockets in highlands and lowlands. Cold labrador current means that this region has a short growing season and produces a smaller range of crops than southern ontario. Harbour ice during the winter, offshore fog, and potential of hurricane-force winds are other challenges. Appalachians do not possess great stores of mineral wealth, mining has and is an important part of the maritime economy.
