As a general rule, psychotherapists are prohibited from disclosing confidential communications to any third party unless mandated or permitted by law to do so. *however, you cannot promise your clients that everything they talk about will always remain confidential. Differing ethics codes have varying definitions of what confidentiality entails, some of which is legal and some is beyond. Though the canadian counseling and psychotherapy association (2007) states that exceptions to confidentiality can occur: When disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the client or others; When legal requirements demand that confidential material be revealed; When a child is in need of protection.
