Autism is a wide range of disorders and ranges from severe to very mild. People with autism spectrum disorders have the full range of intellectual capacity, although a high percentage do have a development delay as an additional exceptionality. For example individuals with asperger"s syndrome are highly intelligent, earn graduate degrees and are successful professional. Only a few people with autism have extraordinary skills. Autistic savants not geniuses but possess highly developed splinter skills. No evidence that bad parenting can cause autism. Historical context: kanner and asperger published papers in 1943 and 1944 in which they defined the children they were observing (withdrawn from fabric of social life into the self) as autistic. 4 children, played alone at a summer camp, average intelligence but channeled it into obsessive preoccupation in narrow areas, such as machinery or mathematical calculations, second their language was perceived as normal. He referred to them as having autistic psychopathy.
