In historical times, divorce was characterized as an event that took place infrequently and when it did it was only permitted to men. In the roman catholic church, a couple remained married until one of the partner dies. The influence of martin luther king and john calvin change some views and said that it was permitted in cases of adultery. With increased participation of women in the workforce, they were no longer financially dependent and they did not have to stay in unfulfilling marriages if they did not want to. The divorce act of 1968 granted divorce for couples who had experience marital breakdown and had been separated for 3 years. In 1985, it was reduced from 3 years to 1 year. No-fault divorce claimed the idea that divorce was neither partner"s fault, which consequently led to an increase in divorces.
