Document Summary

Chapter 11: stress, conlict, and abuse across the life course. The family is held up as the basic building block of society, a place where inimacy is encouraged and where children are nurtured. There are 4 explanaions: sociobiology and evoluionary, psychology, psychological explanaions, sociological explanaions at both the macro and the micro level, and family theory explanaions. Sociobiology is concerned with examining the combinaion of sociobiological and biological factors to explain human behaviour. At its core, this approach applies the darwinian theory of evoluion to explain the moivaion behind social conduct. Geneic evoluionists believe that certain human behaviours exist as the result of weeding out poor adapive social paterns over the course of human history. At the heart of sociobiology and the closely related discipline of evoluionary psychology is the nature versus nurture debate. Evoluionary psychology atempts to minimize the controversy associated with sociobiology once the discipline moved from explaining animal survival behaviour to explaining human social behaviour.
