ENVS 2210 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Royal Jelly, Parthenogenesis, Digestive Enzyme
Document Summary
Unit 3 - honey bee types, nest and colony cycle. Some of the key things to learn in this subtopic include the ability to differentiate the three different types (castes) of honey bees as well as to learn about their roles, activities and behaviours. In this section, we will revisit the honey bee types in more depth and later examine how honey bees engage in and coordinate division of labour in their colonies. We have already mentioned in previous units that there are three types (castes) of individuals in a honey bee colony: the queen, the worker and the drone. Queens and workers are females and drones are males. See the two videos on bee types by clicking the following links: Drones or male bees develop from unfertilized eggs through the process of parthenogenesis (they have mother but lack father); thus, they only carry half the genetic make-up of that carried by female bees.
