The simplicity of the sunnybrook system re ects a genuine elegance: the limited number of ges- tures yields bene ts in terms of ease of use and system learnability. In many systems, the design focus is on providing a single point of control for the surgeon in the operating theatre: while this remains an important goal, surgery involves significant collaborative aspects of imaging practices. There are indeed many points in a procedure when image manipulation could be a distraction to the task at hand. But there are opportunities for a combination to be considered by system developers; as a consequence, the specification of gesture vocabulary across both hands must be de- ned with clinical significance. Interpreting the enor- mous number of images produced by scanning technologies is cumbersome through traditional slice-by-slice visu- alization-and- review techniques.
