Document Summary
Random - we know what outcomes could occur, but we do not know which particular one would happen with a large number of observations, predictable patterns occur. Trial - each occasion we observe in a random phenomenon. Outcome - the value of the random phenomenon. Event - combination of outcomes, subset of the sample space (usually denoted by letters, a, b ) Sample space - collection of all possible outcomes. You roll an unbiased die with 6 faces, observing the upper face. Let a be the event of rolling 1 or 2 . Let b be the event of rolling 3 or 4 b = {3,4} Let c be the event of rolling an odd number c = {1, 3, 5} Venn diagram - picture that depicts all possible outcomes for an experiment, with the outer box representing the sample space (which consists of all the outcomes)
