SOC100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Chinese Communist Revolution, Social Stratification, Petite Bourgeoisie
Document Summary
Primitive societies: living off what they can hunt and find, there are still inequalities between people based on skills and behaviour that end up differentiating people. Hippy communities: share everything, still a hierarchy emerges because some people hold more power and respect than others. Hierarchies (social inequality) based on ability and skill emerge in all societies. Sociological questions: extent of inequality, is inequality truly based on skill and ability, is inequality reproduced across generations. Persistent patterns of social inequality within a society. A lower position in a social stratification system typically means low income, little wealth, limited power, and little prestige. Health, quality of life, longevity (mex weber): titanic if you"re in first class you were more likely to be saved, women and children saved more than men. Ascribed status versus achieved status: ascribed your race, gender, what"s given to you, achieved what you have achieved inn life.
