Simple social play- play that begins at ~15-18 months and continues into toddlerhood, when talking and smiling at each other also occur play has become interactive. Cooperative play- play that is organized around a theme, with each child taking on a different role, and that begins at ~ 2 years of age. During preschool years, cooperative play often involves make-believe. Another benefit is that it allows children to explore topics that frighten them. For many, especially firstborn and only children, make-believe involves imaginary companions associated with many positive social characteristics (tend to be more sociable, have more real friends, and have greater self- knowledge)
