Chapter 11: human development across the life span. Two themes that permeate the study of human development: transition and continuity. The sequence of age-related changes, that occurs as a person progresses from conception to death. Four periods of the life span: prenatal (conception and birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood. Prenatal period: extends from conception to birth, usually encompassing nine months of pregnancy. Three phases of prenatal period: germinal stage (1st two weeks, embryonic stage (2 weeks -2 months, fetal stage (2 months to birth) Germinal stage: first phase of prenatal development, encompassing the first two weeks after conception. Placenta: structure that allows oxygen and nutrients to pass into the fetus from the mother"s bloodstream and bodily wasres to pass out to the mother embryonic stage. The second stage of prenatal development: lasting from two weeks until the end of the second month (most major birth defects and miscarriages) vital organs begin to develop.
