Norms (social): rules that regulate social life, including explicit laws and implicit cultural convenions. Norms are convenions of everyday life that make interacions with other people predictable and orderly. When people observe that everyone else seems to be violaing a social norm, they are more likely to do so too and this is the mechanism by which enire neighborhoods can deteriorate. Certain aspects of every role must be carried out or there will be penalies emoional / inancial or professional. The requirements of a social role are in turn shaped by the culture you live in. Stanley milgram designed a study that would become world famous: milgram wanted to know how many people would obey an authority igure when directly ordered to violate their ethical standards. Paricipants in the study thought they were part of an experiment on the efects of punishment on learning.
