Facial feedback: the process by which the facial muscles send messages to the brain about the basic emoion being express. Mirror neurons: brain cells that ire when a person or animal observes others carrying out an acion; they are involved in empathy, imitaion and reading emoions. Emoions evolve to help people meet the challenges of life: bind people together, moivate them to achieve goals, help to make decisions and plans. Emoion: a state of arousal involving facial and bodily changes, brain acivaion, cogniive appraisals, subjecive feelings, and tendencies toward acion: three major parts: Physiological changes in the face, brain, and body. Cogniive processes such as interpretaions of events. Cultural inluences that shape experience and expression of emoion. Compare emoions to a tree, biological capacity= trunk and root system, thoughts and explanaions= branches, culture= gardener who shapes the tree. Primary emoions: emoions that are considered to be universal and biologically based (fear, anger, sadness, joy, surprise, and disgust)
