PSYC 15065G Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Aqueous Humour, Vitreous Body, Color Blindness
Document Summary
Sensation occurs when special receptors in the sense organs get activated. These receptors get stimulated by different kind of energy. For instance, touch receptors are stimulated by pressure or temperature. Ernest weber"s research had led to the formulation known as weber"s law. Weber"s law : whatever the difference between stimuli might be, it always remains constant. Gustav fechner later expanded on weber"s law, where he studied the absolute threshold. Absolute threshold: lowest level of stimulation that a person can consciously detect 50% of the time that its present. Habituation: tendency of the brain to stop attending to constant, unchanging information. All of our senses are subject to habituation. Sensory adaptation: tendency of sensory receptor cells to become less responsive to a stimulus that is unchanging. The process of sensory adaptation is different from habituation because the receptor cells stop responding to an unchanging stimulus.
