Important to ob b/c people"s behaviour is based on their perception of what reality is (not reality itself: our perception becomes the reality from which we act. Interpretation of what you see is heavily influenced by personal characteristics (e. g. attitudes, motives, past experiences) We hear what we want to hear, and see what we want to see. Relationship of a target to its background influences perception. The time at which we see an object/event can influence attention. People are not perceptive about their own abilities. Many of our perceptions are formed by first impressions and small cues. Errors that distort perception process : attribution theory, selective perception, halo effect, contrast effects, stereotyping. Internally caused behaviours observer believes to be under the personal behavioural control of another individual (e. g. student was late to class and teacher thought it was because of partying)
