Document Summary

Response variable: variable that measures an outcome or result of study dependent variable. Explanatory variable: variable that we think explains/causes changes in the response variable independent variable. Lurking variable: variable that has an important effect on the relationship among the variables in a study but is not one of the explanatory variables studied. Ex: prepping for a test when the study is online vs in person lectures. Confounded: describes a variable when effects on response variables cannot be distinguished: may be either explanatory or lurking variables. Double blind: an experiment in which neither subjects nor physicians recording the symptoms know which treatment was received. First goal: to ensure that it will show us the effect of the explanatory variables on the response variables. Compare 2 or more treatments to prevent confounding variables. A placebo is an example of a control group: helps to control he effects of lurking variables.
