Aristotle made first systematic classification of living things by dividing them first into plants & animals. Then grouped animals into land dwellers, water dwellers, air dwellers & plants into 3 categories based on differences in stems. Although linnaeus credited w/ introducing simple hierarchical system for classifying & naming organisms in mid 1700s, was preceded earlier by john ray. Ray - pioneered classifications - kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. Understanding organization of circadian system in diff species is key to understanding circadian systems in general, from molecular to ecological. Unlike mammals, eyes of birds do not provide only light signal to circadian system. Menaker guessed that photoreceptors reside w/i brain. Pineal organ - develops from similar region of brain to eyes & pineal & eyes have many features in common in non-mammals, including photo-reception. In non-mammals, pineal is situated near surface of brain, & light reaches pineal by passing through skin & skull.
