Chapter 1: the scientific study of personality: personality theories: concerned with significant questions about human behavior, thought and emotion. Focusing on motivation and action, concerned with the psychological characteristics that make each person unique. Each theory specifies the way human cognitive and emotional life are determined. Also considered theories of development from childhood to maturity and old age. Scientific theories: accounts of personality and its development ideally generate hypotheses that can be empirically tested: all sciences share a common core of assumptions and a procedural code (scientific method) 4 essential assumptions to scientific studies: determinism: events in nature are lawfully regulated and act in orderly ways. The universe and all the things + organisms within it act in lawful and orderly ways: establishes the basis on which all scientific inquiries rest, all human behaviors (overt and covert) is lawfully determined.
