IAT 210 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: User Interface
IAT 210 - Textbook - Chapter 6
Abstract
● Person - user-centered design method which sets up fictitious characters to represent
diff user types w/i targeted demographic groups that might use site/product
● Using personas for user interface design helps software engineers to better understand
end users’ requirements b/c sets up concrete figure representing consistent & reliable
understanding of end user groups
Overview
● Persona - fictitious, specific, concrete representation of target users
● Goal of persona - help product temas better understand users & thus improve their
products
What is a Persona
● Collection of realistic representation info which can include fictitious details for more
accurate characterization - Cooper & Reimann
● 2 important facts
○ Personas come from reality
○ Some of elements making up persona are imaginary
● Persona’s name, photo, other social attributes can be fictitious, b/c items do not have
significant impacts on product interface design
● Persona composed of refined info from real life/imagination
● Personas are engaging & do not put unneeded stress on developers
● Elements of persona result from raw user data which is carefully collected & analyzed
from data sources
How to Create a Persona
● Process includes 6 steps
○ Identify persona data sources
○ Set up user categories
○ Collect user data
○ Prioritize the skeletons
○ Convert skeletons to persona foundation documents
○ Designate persona types
● Identify persona data sources
○ Before creation of persona, have to prepare enough direct users
○ Can request reliable third parties to provide user data
○ Gathering data directly from target users might be time & money consuming
● Set up user categories
