Gov hid statistics of dead ppl, mentioned camaraderie instead. Did not have same connection to br as english. War measures act: make sure no info would leak out, could detain them w/o reason, sent to internment camps. Gov censored material written in enemy alien"s language. Not enough volunteers, glory of war quickly faded away. 1917: pm borden introduced conscription military service act. Patriotism > lives of citizens (good for country > good for individual) Ppl who opted out of war (slackers, shirkers) looked down upon, intense resentment towards them. Born in england, then moved to u. s. Received lots of criticism once accepted into geneva medical college in 1847.
