Although much learned regarding clinical/typological profiles of adolescents involved in juvenile sex offending & extent to which group differs from those involved in juvenile nonsexual offending, research focused entirely on offender . In process, less learned about offence & developmental context in which jso arises. Gap b/w more recent empirical observations & existing policies has led to call for new phase of research using developmentally-oriented perspective to study jso. Emphasizing developmental process of offending contrasts w/ clinical, typological, comparative research tending to describe & defined indivs based on their characteristics at just one period of life course. There is lack of research on jso connecting past & future development among adolescent perpetrators. Developmental life course (dlc) approach favors focus on jso, behavioral precursors to offense, description of nature, frequency, seriousness of jso, including whether behavior continues in adulthood. Approach may help confront false perceptions & associated policies portraying adolescents involved in jso as life course persistent predators.
