Belief that skull is suppose reflect size of brain. Larger front portion = superior, larger hind portion = inferior. Studies tend to show whites as superior, but research usually done w/o knowledge of which skulls are from minorities. Also assumed that shape of skull should conform to brain. Wrong in sense that bumps can determine criminal behaviour. Most of these disciplines focused on contrasting ethnic differences. Darwin"s origin of species made huge impact on disciplines - - > argued humans evolved from number of adaptions preferred by natural selection. Lombroso"s theory of atavism and born criminals. Argues that born criminals (chronic offenders) should be target in addressing crimes. Ppl w/ more than 5 stigmata indicates person is atavistic - - > born criminal. Lombroso as father of criminology & positive school. Gained prominence in identifying factors beyond free will and free choice. Idea of superior and inferior genetics - - > inferior should be controlled or eliminated (eg slavery, eugenics)
