CRIM 251 Chapter Notes - Chapter midterm readings: Recruit Training, Slot Machine, Bow Street Runners
Document Summary
Police are the only agents of the criminal justice system with whom most canadians ever have contact. They work, in contrast with personnel in other components, in an environment that is always changing. Media ( increased the visibility of the police) canadian public being more demanding and less forgiving of issues related to police misconduct. Policing as an occupation is often characterized by considerable role ambiguity. The daily tasks are often difficult and at time unappealing. (not very pleasant). They are highly trained, multi-skilled professionals who have a broad range of demands placed on them. This includes training to deal with at risk and vulnerable groups, cultural and ethnic minorities, newcomers, and aboriginal people. With a few notable exceptions, police officers are the only personnel in the justice system with the authority to arrest and detain people and to use lethal force while carrying out their legally mandated duties.
