It is critical for anyone studying victims of crime to recognize that without victim"s courage to report criminal act, very few criminals would ever be apprehended. Often, state can only pursue charges if victim exists & is willing to report crimes against him/her. Sometimes must also be prepared to testify in court about experience. Area in study of crime is relatively new. Only handful of academics engaged in studying victim experience until 1970s. Research on victims emerged out of human rights movements. Victim - person harmed, injured, killed as result of crime, accident/other event/action. Primary victim - person directly harmed as result of victimizing experience. Secondary victim - person not directly impacted by harmful effects of victimizing event but may witness event/have to deal with after-effects of victimizing event. Tertiary victim - person who may suffer repercussions of victimization even though not directly involved/witness to harmful event. Direct victim - person present at time of victimization & experiences harm.
