Traditionally, mass cmns research has conceptualized process of cmn in terms of circulation circuit/loop. Model criticized for linearity for concentration of level of message exchange & for absence of structured conception of diff moments as complex structure of relations. Process requires material instruments & its own sets of social relations. Organization & combination of practices w/i media apparatuses. In discursive form, circulation of product takes place & its distribution to diff audiences. Once accomplished, discourse must be translated into social practices if circuit is to be both completed & effective. If no meaning taken, there can be no consumption. Discursive form of message has privileged position in communicative exchange & moments of encoding & decoding are determinate moments. Raw historical event cannot, in that form, cannot be transmitted by tv newscast. Events can only be signified w/i aural visual forms of televisual discourse.
