Ethical values are situation specific and time oriented. Everyone must have an ethical base that applies to conduct in the business world and personal life. Ethical development can be thought of as having 3 levels. Pre-conventional mortality more basic level is childlike. It is calculating, self centered even selfish, and is based on what will be immediately punished or rewarded. Conventional mortality moves from egocentric view point towards the expectations of society. Loyalty and obedience to the organization (or society) become paramount. A marketing decision maker at this level would be concerned only with whether the proposed action is legal and how it would be viewed by others. Post-conventional mortality represents the mortality of the mature adult. At this level, people are less concerned about how others might see them and more concerned about how they see and judge themselves over the long run.
