Food is an essential for biological organisms to survive. Eating refers to ingestion of food in various forms and by various means that is needed for biological existence. Yet, food is more than a source of energy and nutrients essential for human health and well-being and there are many substances humans eat that may not be needed for their health or in fact harm them. What we eat, how we eat, when and with whom we eat reflect the complexity of wide cultural arrangements around food. What is edible changes from society to society and has also changed over time in history. Eating is one of the most common human activities we engage in on a regular basis.
