Document Summary

Ch 10 crisis the food system: the farm crisis. Media images of farming: rustic, serene, healthy. Media images directed to farmers: chemical pesticides, machinery that can wipe out pests and get the job done, masculine and victorious: promise power and profit to farmers who may feel oppressed. Changes in agriculture & farming: immigrant farmers displaced hunter-gatherer food systems, high-tech, corporate controlled agriculture displaced family farming. Political and economic power has shifted from the family farm to corporate agri-business and international markets. Industrialization of farming began over 2 centuries ago. Replacing animal power with engines increased speed, power, and output of farms. Replacing animal food with tractor fuel increases ghg & makes production vulnerable to the dependence on non-renewable resources. Farmer(cid:495)s lost their self-reliance & self-sufficiency: reduced physical labour, new skills: operating equipment, mixing chemicals, doing advanced accounting, navigating government programs, running computers. Just as dependent on grocery stores as non-farming households.
